Recently CNN published the results of the testing of over 200 varieties of baby food and it has been concluded that alarming amounts of various toxic heave metals such as arsenic, cadmium, mercury and lead. Arsenic has been the main focus because it is extremely toxic in its inorganic form for babies. Babies are very sensitive to toxins. Arsenic is a neurotoxin and has been linked to cancer, skin lesions, permanently altering the brains development, eroding IQ, and negatively impacting behavior. These heavy metals occur naturally in the soil, polluted groundwater and the air but they are absorbed easily into foods like rice. The concern is lots of parents introduce their babies to rice at a very early age via rice cereal and rice snacks. Also, lots of baby food companies use rice flour as a filler and rice more often than not is cultivated in polluted groundwater. If rice is an absolute necessity, white rice has less arsenic than brown rice because that bran layer is peeled off of white rice. It’s so important to carefully read the labels of your food because so many companies sneak in unhealthy fillers and preservatives that wreak havoc on our gut health.
